School Funnies

It is true that kids say the darnedest things!

I've been coming home every night writing down all the hilarious things the kids say and do.

1. One of my kids hears me say something to a Spanish speaking student in Spanish. He says, "Ms. Marquez if you can speak English and Spanish, How do you say my name in Chinese?"

2. I call my students to come sit on the floor to go over the safety rules for Science. I say, "We are going to talk about Science..." A student interrupts and says, "Ms. Marquez, can we talk about God instead. You know He made EVERYTHING!"

3. For the weekly spelling test one of our words was "fat." I read off: "Fat. My aunt has a fat cat." During the time I'm giving them to write the word a student says: "Ms. Marquez does it make you sad that you have a big belly and everyone thinks you're fat?" (HOLY WHAT!?!?! hahahaha!)

4. Our school has breakfast in the classroom. I set a timer so they are busy eating and not busy playing with their food, but sometimes it's inevitable. They had bananas as part of their breakfast one morning and when I turn around one of the girls is using this banana as a phone. She asked her friend on the "phone" to please run some errands for her because she's busy at school and won't get out until it's too late. Girls will be girls!

Running front:

Running has not happened since last Wednesday. That means it's been a week and three days. :O( It's not like last Wednesday's run was great either....it honestly sucked. But saying hello to first graders, loads of "unexpected" stress, and some really late nights, also means saying hello to germs and a weaker immune system.

I'm using this Labor Day weekend to get myself better.

*****************************

Autumn is around the corner and it makes me so.....DREAMY!! I love this season - it's seriously my favorite of all time! It's perfect season to re-read Pride and Prejudice for the umpteenth time and of course to watch YOU'VE GOT MAIL while doing chores or working on stuff for school. Oh - and of course having that Louis Armstrong Pandora station is a MUST!!

I found this song several years ago, when I used to surf MySpace specifically to find music that made my heart skip a beat. This one is perfect for the season.

Enjoy the summer heat - what's left of it! I hope to be wearing layered apparel soon!! :O)

Sharing a Song

I've had this song on my ipod since I heard of the Art, Music, Justice Tour. (sidenote: If you're curious, I missed the concert. Sad. But I have the music and I love it.) This weekend a tune kept popping in my head and I knew it was of significance, but I couldn't figure what the lyrics were so I pulled up the lyrics and listened to it (and I teared up). After listening to it and reading the lyrics, there's no wonder why I love this song so much!!

Here is the video:

And here are the lyrics:

Add To The Beauty
- Sara Groves

We come with beautiful secrets
We come with purposes written on our hearts, written on our souls
We come to every new morning
With possibilities only we can hold, that only we can hold

Redemption comes in strange places, small spaces
Calling out the best of who we are

And I want to add to the beauty
I want to tell a better story
Shine with the light
That's burning up inside

It comes in small inspirations
It brings redemption to life and work, to our lives and our work
It comes in loving community
It comes in helping a soul find it's worth, the soul find it's worth

Redemption comes in strange places, small spaces
Calling out the best of who we are

And I want to add to the beauty
I want to tell a better story
Shine with the light
That's burning up inside

This is grace, an invitation to be beautiful
This is grace, an invitation

Redemption comes in strange places, small spaces
Calling out our best

I want to add to the beauty
I want to shine with the light
That's burning up inside

And I want to add to the beauty
I want to tell a better story
Shine with the light
That's burning up inside

Excitement Abounds!!

At church tonight, one of the guys that I met at P.E.P. who is now in the free world was baptized tonight. So I love baptisms, BUT this one in particular I just wanted to jump up and down and WHOOP WHOOP all over the place.

I've recently been thinking about God's love for us. Particularly, 1 John 3:1
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
And how His love for us changes us. We are LIGHT. Our entire appearance changes. It's definitely true for this guy! It makes me want to sing at the TOP of my lungs!

I LOVE P.E.P. But more than that I love God. He is faithful to finish the work He begins in us.

On another note, the Anderson cousins (my cousins) have been singing with a local rapper - COLCUTZ. I want for you guys to listen to this song...it's good. Sung by my oh so VERY talented cousin Hannah.

My Favorite Number

I think it's awesome that one of my favorite singers joined up with one of my favorite programs (for kids) to sing about my favorite number - 4, Four, Cuatro, Sa, Net, Bon, Quatre.

P.S. Happy First Day of Spring to YOU! This message is brought to you by the number 4 and the letter F! :o)

A Good Scare and Great Music

So, I got my wisdom teeth pulled out and gave everyone a good scare when I got home. I did it on purpose - to see if everyone really loves me. HA! Just kidding. It was truly a misery and I'm glad to be home. Ready to celebrate Christmas.

My diet consists of Raman Noodles, Home Made Soups, Ice cream and lots of water.

I also wanted to share with you my current obsession - Griffin House. Here's a video.

Global Heart Warming – yes.

A while ago, I saw a little blurb on TV about Young at Heart. This musician decided he’d go to the older generation to sing modern music (Rock n' ROLL) and I tell you what, I LOVE IT!! There is something so special about this group. Older people have so much to teach us and they have stories we know not of...They’d tell us if we’d stop to listen. These guys don’t know if their friends are going to make it to the next concert. “It’s a part of life,” they say.

Watch this video – This is one where they practiced with the lead singer. The lead singer didn’t make it so they invited another YOUNG at Heart to sing Coldplay's, FIX YOU. The oxygen tank – you can hear it. It gave me chills, and, of course, I had to reach for the Kleenex. I can't wait to see the movie.

And friends - I want to give you HUGE hugs!

So, I didn't get to watch all the Oscar show, but I AM SO GLAD I didn't miss Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová winning the award for best original music! Seriously, it's such a BIG deal! I mean - HUGE! These guys made a low budget film and never EVER dreamed of getting and OSCAR and THEY DID!!!! And the music is GOOD! I'm SO PUMPED! Talk about underdogs!!

Did you guys watch it? I mean, the Oscar's? What were your favorite wins?

A Wednesday Word: making wednesday worthwhile

Words make songs. Some songs are worth posting on a Wednesday!
Enjoy! ha ha ha.

Uh-MAZING! Hip Hip HOORAY!

THIS SUPER BOWL GAME WAS AMAZING!!!!

WOW! OMG. Like the most INCREDIBLE game I've ever, Ever, EVER seen! Even I, pretty much a non-football girl, was on my feet hooting and hollering throughout the entire game for the Giants! Wow. I hope you guys didn't miss out on Mr. Hollywood losing! The Patriot's coach is a sour puss! But who can blame him really? It's a true upset. OH BUT WHAT A SWEET VICTORY!! AMAZING! UNBELIEVABLE!

And one more thing - I CANNOT believe Paula Abdul! Is she really serious with the new single or is it a promo for American Idol? If that's the case (promo for AI) I think it nullifies all commentary from both her and Randy! I mean, seriously? Seriously, she made a single? Where is Simon to shoo them off stage?

bringin' back the 80's

{read with a valley girl accent!}
So, I will confess that I pretty much detest the 80's trend that has hit full force with some people. It kind of like - makes me cringe. But like, I won't hate too much, because if I could - I'd totally bring back 80's music.

{back to normal}
Today, I went to pick up my lunch and I was standing patiently for the guy to finish up my COMIDA and can you guess what I heard? I mean, SERIOUSLY, it was an automatic smile and lip sinkin' with a little bit of shakin' the hip action with a pretend microphone to my face. (I'm not ashamed! and I was by myself so no one was going to stop me!)

Here it goes: WILSON PHILLIPS!
♪Some day somebody's gonna make you want to
Turn around and say goodbye
Until then baby are you going to let them
Hold you down and make you cry
Don't you know?
Don't you know things can change
Things'll go your way
If you hold on for one more day
Can you hold on for one more day
Things'll go your way
Hold on for one more day♫
Girls - they just wanna have fun!

Notes on being a Mimi

This is more of a warning than anything. If you so choose to name your child Mimi or a name with the corresponding nickname Mimi, beware of what your child will endure any time she meets new people (specifically in a group setting):

  • This is funny, because the person saying it is trying to not be offensive!
"Oh that name reminds me of this really funny lady on this really funny show!"
"The Drew Carey Show? Mimi?"
"Yeah how did you know?"
"Uhm, I've seen the show. And I dressed like her once for Halloween!"
  • "Your name is MIMI???? OMG, That's what I call my Gramma!"
  • ♫♪Mi-mi-mi-MIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!♫♪
  • "OMG! have you ever seen the movie/show RENT? OMG, it's the best! The main character is Mimi!! Your name CANNOT be MIMI MARQUEZ!!! (insert the mimi song for the next 20 minutes)

It's fun to play along! However, when the singing doesn't stop - God SPARE US! Wow.

Checkity Check

It's always around this time of year that I am amazed at how fast time flies.

Tomorrow is SATURDAY!

A quick overview (of last weekend) -
  • Friday night: Went to see Gabi's Orchestra Concert. I was really impressed that they learned such a difficult piece in two weeks. I'm also extremely proud that she is SECOND chair! I could never make it to second chair. :o(
  • Saturday: Read for a while in the morning, cleaned the kitchen, went to gramma's for lunch and ended up taking the longest nap ever in my life. I must be tired or something because I'm not a napper. I went to see my cousin Mikey go from cub scouts to boy scouts. It was funny to see how "serious" he gets when he's in formation. My Tia Mimi worked hard on the "arrow of light." I need to get an example of that because it's serious work. Then, I met up with some friends at the Lights in the Heights. That was Christmas fun and festive. We went back to their house and had some soups - not that it was wintery cold outside.
  • Sunday: Went to LA IGLESIA and then had birthday lunch with Amy and Rosy (cousins), who turned 24!! And then went to watch Shane & Shane and Bethany Dillon. These people sound so much better live!! Something about recording in a studio that kills the edge of live music.

Wednesday Word: I've neglected it. But have not fear, it will be here (next week?). I have to get Jennifer to send me the quotation that is perfect to go along with the Wednesday Word. And guys: Check this out. Learn new words while feeding the hungry! Great way of combining charity with education! And speaking of words: Patricia posted this cool link about important 3 words. It's amazing!

And just for the heck of looking at a cute growing girl go check out Susanne's blog. Her daughter Lindsey is SUPER DUPER CUTE!

Merry Christmas!

A Big Fan

I've never had a "favorite" singer before. That's until I heard of Brandi Carlile. Early in the year I found out about her, bought both of her cd's and I'm pretty sure that I played THE STORY on "repeat all" for over a month. It's never in my nature to listen to an entire album on repeat. BUT I just can't help it with her music.

When I first got THE STORY, I made sure roll down the windows, turn up the volume, and sing (more like SING!) along. One of those many times, an unfortunate day, the speaker on the left side of the dashboard just busted (not a pretty sound). I mean, seriously... So thankfully - Pearl is still under warranty and she'll be taken care of! And I will never do that again (maybe).

This past weekend she was here in Houston! And I've gotta say that she is freaking AMAZING! If you like her music, she's even better in person! She did this whole unplugged thing where she got out from behind the mic, the boys unplugged their guitars and they sang. You don't get that anymore! She sang Bohemian Rhapsody (unfinished because she's still learning the chords on the piano), Folsom Prison, and B.C. originals! If she ever comes by your town/city YOU SHOULD go! You won't regret it.
